Lithuania is a country located on the shore of the Baltic Sea. It occupies an area of slightly over 40,500 square miles (65,000 square kilometers), bordering Poland and Kaliningrad (Russian Federation) in the southwest, Belarus in the east, and Latvia in the north. The country is divided into four regions: Aukštaitija, the good countries in the upper east and focal part of the nation; Zemaitija, the marshes in the west, extending from the Baltic coast to the Nevėžis waterway; Dzūkija, in the southeast; and Suvalkija, in the southwest. The atmosphere is sea along the coast and mainland in different zones. The actual climate varies from flatlands to low, moving slopes farther inland. There are more than 8,000 lakes in the region.

Located at the confluence of the Neris and Vilnia streams in the southwest of the country, Vilnius has served as the nation’s capital since the fourteenth century, with the exception of the years 1919–1939, when Poland annexed parts of southern Lithuania, during which time it was unintentionally relocated to Kaunas.

Like many other countries, Lithuanians spend a large portion of their leisure time eating, watching TV, reading, and enjoying music. The majority of men also like to watch sports, while women tend to be more fashion-conscious.

Even with the rapid advancement of foreign cooking techniques in cafés, Lithuanians still prefer making their own cuisine at home. The majority of Lithuanian women and a small percentage of men are skilled at plating the country’s staple foods.

Most Lithuanians spend three and a half hours a day in front of a TV, so popular performers and TV characters are well-known figures. They watch mostly local TV series, most foreign films (though Lithuanian cinema has made a comeback), and both foreign and local TV shows. The internet is gradually replacing writing as a source of knowledge. Similarly, many Lithuanian “works of art” are not particularly appealing to young people because they were created during very different periods of violent Lithuanian history. Nevertheless, because of its ability to transmit the past that is easily forgotten, Lithuanian writing is an essential text to be studied in schools.

Sport is the most local distraction of all. While sport is more popular among men, many women also follow the major events. Lithuanians enjoy watching how their own athletes protect their “public wonder” and will generally think little of unfamiliar athletes even when they are significantly improved.

There are many international student-focused events, especially during the first few weeks of the semester, which is the best way to meet other students and form local friendships. In addition to going out, Lithuania’s small size is beneficial for the domestic travel industry; we have fantastic public park zones where you can climb unusual paths, kayak, or bicycle. If you prefer more daring activities, you may try air ballooning above treetops, paintballing in former military bases, or wakeboarding. As in many other countries, Lithuanians spend a significant amount of their free time eating, gazing at TV, reading, and watching movies.
