ESSENTIAL NOTES
- Although the Syrian Electronic Visa was introduced on May 1, there are rumors that it is still not operational.
- The program has been interpreted as an attempt by the Syrian dictatorship to boost its income and prestige.
- It is said that the nation cannot process electronic visas.
The Syrian government introduced the electronic visa, which will streamline the visa application procedure, in an effort to attract more foreign visitors.
As of May 1, foreign nationals can apply for electronic visas without having to physically visit a Syrian embassy or consulate overseas, according to SANA, the official news agency of Syria.
“The Ministry of Tourism, in coordination with the Ministry of Communications and Technology – the Syrian Telecommunications Company, the Ministry of Interior, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, is pleased to inform fellow Syrian citizens, Arab citizens, and foreigners of the launch of the e-Visa service, as of May 1, 2024. “

Syrian E-Visa Initiative Will Affect Politics & Economy, Analyst Says
Although the program is seen favorably, some people think it might only help specific groups and not the country as a whole.
Firas Shaabo, an economic analyst in Syria, claims that the introduction of electronic visas will have an economic impact on the nation, bolstering its treasury through increased revenue from the tourism industry, which is largely controlled by supporters of Bashar al-Assad and includes hotels, restaurants, and other tourist amenities.
Shabbo noted that e-visa programs can also have a political impact by conveying the idea that social and economic aspects of tourism in Syria have returned to their pre-crisis levels. This approach aims to promote tourism even in the face of glaring infrastructure deficiencies.
The statement, it notes, is “just media talk,” since the country cannot handle processing visas electronically and the program is still not open for applications.
Syria’s latest tourism fees reveal the country’s efforts to earn foreign currency.
The Syrian Ministry of Finance introduced a new tax in 2023 that required foreign cars entering the country to pay $100 for a two-week temporary visit. Vehicle license plates from Jordan and Lebanon are exempt from the rule. The sum for cars that have been in the nation for up to four months is double the list price of $200.
At the moment, $1 is worth SYP 13,001.9, which indicates that the Syrian pound is among the weakest globally. The Syrian Pound is now the ninth worst currency in the world when measured against the US dollar, according to the UN Operational Rates of Exchange.
Syria hopes to boost its reputation in order to attract more tourists and increase its revenue. Since the start of the war in 2011, the country’s tourism has been dropping.
